Adam Savage (@donttrythis) captivated the crowds during his keynote presentation kicking off events at COLLABORATE 14.
Adam may be best known as the co-host of "MythBusters" on the Discovery Channel, but he is also a longtime special-effects artist, fabricator, model maker and general dreamer-upper who has worked on films such as Galaxy Quest and the Matrix sequels as well as Episodes I and II of the Star Wars series.
Savage engaged the crowd of Oracle users with a mix of storytelling and Q&A, fielding a slew of questions from the audience. He dispensed numerous pearls of wisdom that made their way to Twitterand the COLLABORATE Mobile App. Here are a few highlights, in no particular order:
Ignorance is not equal to bliss.
The only wrong response to art is to let someone else tell you what to think.
Both artists and scientists are seen by society as either geniuses, or whack jobs.
Asking questions is generally a creative act.
Science and art are the twin engines driving society forward. Always have been.
Question everything, but don't be a jerk. It's just human.
Art belongs in the same discussions as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M., not S.T.E.M.).
In order for two people to agree on results, the question must be seen and understood in the same way.
The presentation of scientific facts is absolutely vital to our survival.
My job isn't to change your mind, that's up to you.
